NASA’s DART (Double Asteroid Redirection Test) – the world’s first planetary defense technology demonstration successfully impacted its asteroid target on Monday 26th September 2022. It was the NASA’s first attempt to move an asteroid in space. So let’s know more about NASA DART-World’s First Space planetary Defence Technology.

Nasa Dart - World's First Space planetary Defence Technology

This attempt was aiming the defence we can have if some evil asteroid try to hit earth. From this experiment NASA can proudly say that it can send a spacecraft to intentionally hit an asteroid if there’s risk of collision with earth.

NASA shared a video on social media platforms of it’s spacecraft’s finding till the last moment of collision.

This mission targetted the asteroid moonlet Dimorphos, a small body just 530 feet (160 meters) in diameter. It revolve (orbits) around a larger, 2,560-foot (780-meter) asteroid called Didymos.

Now study about after effects happening and NASA gathering all the relevant data for future missions. This mission aims to demonstrate that the path of an asteroid can be changed using a kinetic impactor. A vending machine-size spacecraft deliberately crashed into a stadium-size asteroid at 14,000 mph (22,500 km/h).⁣

In other words we can say Kinetic impact is viable technology that can be used someday to prevent asteriod collision to Earth.

Kinectic Impact

Kinetic impaction involves sending one or more large, high-speed spacecraft into the path of an approaching object close to earth. This could deflect the asteroid into a different trajectory, steering it away from the Earth’s orbital path. Kinetic impactors may not be effective in change the orbit of the very largest asteroids.

Future Asteriod Collision Possibility

According to NASA, There are no known asteroid threats to Earth for at least the next 100 years.⁣ But the space can be change at anytime and this mission aims to make prepare the Earth for better defence if that happens.

NASA DART-World’s First Space planetary Defence Technology Verdict

So, NASA in it’s world’s first ever planetary defence technology attempt hit the asteriod Dimorphos successfully. It proves that a kinectic impactor can be used to shift Asteriod direction if it came to Earth directly. It is seen in the hollywood movies, but now for real we can say we have this superpower.
