Apple has finally entered the foldable phone market, but it isn’t arriving in an empty field. The new iPhone Duo has arrived more than seven years after Samsung introduced its first Galaxy Fold, putting Apple’s first foldable directly against a much more mature Galaxy Z Fold8. And the interesting part is that Apple and Samsung have taken noticeably different approaches.
Apple is treating the iPhone Duo as a completely new interpretation of the iPhone, combining a 7.6-inch foldable display, A20 Pro chip, iOS 27 and a titanium design. Samsung, meanwhile, has spent multiple generations refining its book-style foldable around a large internal display, multitasking and Android-based productivity.
That makes the iPhone Duo vs Galaxy Z Fold8 comparison less about which company finally built a foldable and more about how differently the two companies think a foldable phone should work.

Apple’s official specifications confirm the Duo’s 7.6-inch inner display, 5.4-inch outer display, 254g weight, A20 Pro processor and 48MP dual-camera system. Samsung lists the Fold8 at 201g with an 8-inch main display, Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy and a 4,800mAh battery.
At first glance, it is surprising that Apple’s first foldable doesn’t have the larger internal display.
The iPhone Duo opens to 7.6 inches, while Samsung describes the Galaxy Z Fold8’s main display as 8 inches.
But screen size isn’t the only difference.
Apple has designed both Duo displays around a common aspect ratio so that content can scale more naturally as the phone moves between folded and unfolded modes. The company also uses a nano-texture finish on the inner display to reduce reflections and make the fold less visually prominent.
Samsung’s Fold8, meanwhile, uses its large 4:3 internal screen as a more tablet-like canvas for movies, gaming, reading and multitasking. Samsung specifically highlights the 4:3 main display and 10:16 cover screen as part of the Fold8’s flexible viewing experience.
The iPhone Duo’s external display measures 5.4 inches.
Apple describes the closed phone as being similar in size to a passport and says the outer display provides 90 percent of the screen area of the iPhone 18 Pro.
Samsung takes a different approach with its cover screen, retaining a more conventional smartphone-shaped external experience while using the 8-inch panel inside for the major expansion.
That means the two phones don’t simply fold in the same way. They are designed around different assumptions about how frequently users will open the device.
This is one of the most striking differences between the two phones.
The iPhone Duo weighs 254 grams.
The Galaxy Z Fold8 weighs 201 grams.
That’s a 53-gram difference.
Samsung says the Fold8 is its lightest Galaxy Z Fold yet, with the 201g design helping make a large-screen foldable easier to carry.
Apple’s Duo is still relatively thin for a foldable, measuring 5.2mm when open and 11.3mm when folded, but its titanium construction and overall design result in a substantially heavier device.
For people who carry a foldable all day, weight could therefore become one of the most noticeable differences between these two phones.

There is an obvious historical difference between these phones.
Samsung has been developing Galaxy Fold devices since 2019.
Apple is entering the category with its first foldable in 2026.
That matters because foldables have several engineering challenges that don’t exist in conventional smartphones: hinges, flexible displays, crease management, durability, dust protection and software that needs to adapt to different screen configurations.
Samsung’s eighth-generation Fold is therefore arriving after years of hardware iteration, while Apple’s Duo represents Apple’s first attempt to solve the same problems within its own ecosystem.
Apple is betting that its tight control over hardware and software can produce a different kind of foldable experience from the beginning. Apple itself describes the Duo as a product built around hardware and software engineered together.
The performance battle is equally interesting.
The iPhone Duo uses Apple’s A20 Pro, featuring a six-core CPU, seven-core GPU with Neural Accelerators and dual 16-core Neural Engines. Apple also uses a vapor-cooled design to manage the chip inside the foldable chassis.
The Galaxy Z Fold8 uses Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 Mobile Platform for Galaxy, customized for Samsung’s foldable with dedicated CPU, GPU and NPU capabilities.
On paper, both are flagship-class platforms. But direct benchmark comparisons between the final retail devices will be more useful than comparing processor names alone.
The iPhone Duo features a 48MP Dual Fusion camera system consisting of a 48MP Fusion Main and 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide camera.
Apple also adds foldable-specific photography features such as Duo Preview, allowing people being photographed to see themselves on the external display, along with Dual Capture and improved video features.
Samsung uses a dual 50MP rear camera system on the Fold8, covering wide and ultra-wide photography.
The important difference is that neither phone is simply trying to replicate the camera setup of its company’s largest conventional flagship.
The Duo, in particular, does not include the dedicated telephoto camera found on Apple’s Pro models.
That could matter to users who consider zoom photography a major reason to buy a premium smartphone.
Battery comparisons between foldables can be misleading because manufacturers don’t always publish capacity in the same way.
Samsung specifies a 4,800mAh battery for the Galaxy Z Fold8.
Apple instead emphasizes video playback. The company rates the Duo for up to 31 hours of video playback using the inner display and up to 44 hours using the outer display. It uses a dual-battery system inside the foldable chassis.
Those numbers should not be treated as directly equivalent to battery capacity.
Real-world battery life will depend on brightness, network connectivity, gaming, camera use, multitasking and how frequently the device is opened.
The iPhone Duo carries an IP68 rating.
The Galaxy Z Fold8 is rated IP48.
These ratings aren’t directly interchangeable as simple numbers, but they indicate different levels of environmental protection.
Apple’s IP68 rating provides a higher stated level of dust protection, while Samsung’s IP48 rating protects against solid objects larger than 1mm and water exposure under the specified test conditions.
That is notable because dust resistance has historically been one of the harder engineering challenges for foldable phones.
Apple has another unusual advantage in the productivity conversation: Apple Pencil support.
Apple says the Duo will support Apple Pencil with USB-C later this year, allowing users to take notes, sketch and mark up documents on either display.
Samsung, meanwhile, has not included S Pen support on the Galaxy Z Fold8.
That is an important change from some earlier generations of Samsung’s foldable strategy.
For users who specifically want pen input on a foldable, the two phones therefore take very different approaches.
The software comparison may ultimately matter more than the hardware.
Apple has redesigned iOS 27 experiences around the Duo’s different orientations and screen configurations. The company says the software is intended to make multitasking, gaming, content consumption and other activities work naturally across the foldable form factor.
Apple is also integrating Apple Intelligence and Siri AI into the Duo experience.
Samsung’s Fold8 continues to build around Android and Galaxy AI, with the large display giving users more room for multitasking and productivity.
The fundamental distinction is familiar: Apple controls iOS and the iPhone hardware together, while Samsung builds its foldable around Android and Samsung’s own software layer.
For existing users, ecosystem compatibility may therefore be more important than a specification-by-specification comparison.
This is where the comparison changes dramatically.
The iPhone Duo starts at ₹2,99,900 in India for 256GB.
The Galaxy Z Fold8 launched in India at ₹1,79,999 for its base configuration.
That creates a price gap of approximately ₹1.20 lakh between the starting models.

That is not a small premium.
The iPhone Duo costs roughly ₹1.2 lakh more at the starting point, before considering discounts, exchange offers or retailer promotions.
Samsung already has the Galaxy Z Fold8 on the Indian market.
Apple’s Duo has a later schedule.
Apple says pre-orders begin October 16, 2026, with availability beginning October 23 in India and other launch markets.
That gives Samsung a substantial period during which the Fold8 is already available while customers wait for Apple’s first foldable.
It also means consumers considering a premium foldable today can already buy Samsung’s eighth-generation Fold rather than waiting for Apple’s first attempt.
This is probably the most important thing to understand about the comparison.
Apple hasn’t simply copied Samsung’s formula.
The Duo has a smaller inner display, a much higher starting price, a heavier body, a different external display experience and a dual-camera system without a dedicated telephoto lens.
At the same time, Apple brings its own strengths: the A20 Pro platform, iOS 27 integration, Apple Intelligence, Apple Pencil support, IP68 protection, a nano-texture inner display and Apple’s tightly integrated hardware-software approach.
Samsung’s Fold8 emphasizes a large 8-inch main display, a lighter 201g body, a 4,800mAh battery, Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy and Samsung’s established foldable platform.
Apple’s arrival changes the competitive landscape even though Samsung already has a mature foldable business.
Samsung now has to compete not just against other Android foldables but against Apple’s interpretation of the category.
Apple also has an enormous installed iPhone user base. Even if only a small portion of existing iPhone customers eventually move to the Duo, that gives Apple a potentially significant audience for foldables.
At the same time, the Duo’s ₹2,99,900 starting price creates a substantial barrier in India.
Samsung therefore enters this comparison with something Apple doesn’t have: years of foldable-specific product experience and a much lower official starting price.
For Apple, the Duo is more than another iPhone model.
It is Apple’s first attempt to prove that the company’s approach to foldables can compete with a category that Samsung has been refining for years.
The challenge isn’t simply making a hinge work.
Apple has to convince existing iPhone users that opening a phone into a larger display is worth paying nearly ₹3 lakh for.
It also needs developers to make meaningful use of the larger display, because the value of a foldable ultimately depends on what users can actually do with the extra screen.
The choice between these two devices depends heavily on the ecosystem a user already uses.

For years, Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold line represented one of the clearest examples of a mainstream smartphone company committing to book-style foldables.
Now Apple has entered the same category.
But the first iPhone foldable isn’t trying to win simply by matching Samsung specification for specification.
Apple is trying to make the foldable feel like an iPhone that happens to fold.
Samsung has spent years doing almost the opposite: making a foldable that increasingly feels like a phone, tablet and productivity device in one.
