The OnePlus 16 has finally shown its face—and its back has something you probably weren’t expecting. OnePlus has officially revealed the design, colors and memory configurations of its upcoming flagship in China, giving us the clearest look yet at the phone ahead of its full launch. And while the overall design remains surprisingly close to the OnePlus 15, one particular version of the OnePlus 16 gets a feature that makes its rear panel come alive.
It’s called the Interstellar Lighting Effect, and it turns part of the phone’s back into a notification-style lighting system.
OnePlus has also now officially revealed the camera hardware and confirmed Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 chipset, making the OnePlus 16 considerably more interesting than the initial design reveal suggested.
The OnePlus 16 doesn’t represent a complete visual reset.
Official images show a phone that follows the basic design language of the OnePlus 15, including a large square camera module in the upper-left corner, rounded corners and a flat-looking frame. The familiar button arrangement also remains, including OnePlus’ customizable shortcut/AI key.
That means anyone expecting OnePlus to completely redesign its flagship may be surprised. Instead, the company has concentrated its biggest visual experiment on one particular rear-panel finish.
OnePlus has officially revealed three colors:
The names sound considerably more dramatic than ordinary black, silver and orange finishes, but the special one is Tomorrow’s Starlight.
This is the surprise.
The Tomorrow’s Starlight version has an integrated lighting effect underneath the rear glass. OnePlus calls it the Interstellar Lighting Effect.
The illuminated area includes the number 16 and a set of celestial coordinates, giving the phone a distinctive space-themed appearance when the lights activate.
According to OnePlus’ teasers, the effect can respond to different situations including incoming calls, messages, charging and other interactions. Reports also indicate that the lighting can react to music and certain gaming events.
OnePlus has shown multiple lighting effects, meaning this isn’t simply a single LED that turns on whenever a notification arrives.
The feature is exclusive to the Tomorrow’s Starlight finish.
The idea is somewhat similar to what we’ve already seen from other phones that use their rear panels as visual indicators, but OnePlus is taking a more integrated approach.
Instead of putting a conventional notification LED next to the camera, the light is built into the design itself.
That could make the OnePlus 16 recognizable from across a room without requiring the user to turn the screen on.
However, the exact extent to which users will be able to customize the lighting remains something to watch once the phone is fully launched.
OnePlus isn’t relying entirely on the lights to make this version different.
The Tomorrow’s Starlight model uses a silk glass treatment designed to provide a smoother surface and reduce visible fingerprints. The rear panel also incorporates a nano-grating-style texture that contributes to its starlight appearance.
In normal lighting, the phone can look relatively understated. When the lighting effect activates, however, the rear design becomes much more noticeable.
| Color | Design | Special Feature |
|---|---|---|
| Tomorrow’s Starlight | Silver/grey-inspired finish | Interstellar Lighting Effect and silk glass |
| Dark Forest | Dark/black finish | More understated rear design |
| Mars Masterpiece | Light orange/warm finish | Textured rear design |
The design may be familiar, but the camera system is getting a much bigger change.
OnePlus has officially revealed that the OnePlus 16 will use a 200MP primary camera.
The main sensor has a 1/1.4-inch size and an f/1.6 aperture, according to the company’s camera announcement.
The main camera is joined by:
The 200MP main camera is a major departure from the OnePlus 15’s triple-50MP rear setup. The telephoto camera also changes, with the OnePlus 16 using a 3x optical zoom system rather than the OnePlus 15’s 3.5x telephoto specification.
The camera hardware isn’t the only change.
OnePlus is introducing its second-generation LUMO imaging system on the OnePlus 16, bringing the imaging pipeline developed within the OPPO ecosystem to the phone.
The company has also revealed three new photography modes:
OnePlus has also highlighted Open Gate capabilities and advanced video features in its camera teasers. Some reports citing the company’s camera announcement say the system supports 4K 120fps video, Dolby Vision and LOG recording.
Under the hood, the OnePlus 16 is also moving to Qualcomm’s newest flagship platform.
OnePlus has confirmed the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6.
The chip is built on a 2nm manufacturing process and is designed around Qualcomm’s latest-generation Oryon CPU architecture.
OnePlus is positioning the phone heavily toward gaming, and the company has scheduled its OnePlus Game Conference 2026 for September 28, where it is expected to reveal more about the phone’s gaming architecture and performance.
OnePlus has also confirmed a major display feature: the phone supports a 165Hz refresh rate.
That is particularly interesting because OnePlus is emphasizing gaming performance rather than simply using a high refresh rate as a specification-sheet number.
Reports indicate the display can reach 185Hz in supported games, although users should treat the gaming-mode details separately from the company’s confirmed 165Hz system-wide refresh rate until the final retail software is available.
The display is expected to use BOE’s X4 panel technology and measure around 6.78 inches, but the final complete retail specification sheet has not yet been published by OnePlus.
OnePlus has also confirmed that the new flagship will skip an 8GB RAM configuration.
| RAM | Storage |
|---|---|
| 12GB | 256GB |
| 12GB | 512GB |
| 16GB | 512GB |
| 16GB | 1TB |
The top-end 16GB + 1TB configuration gives the OnePlus 16 enough memory and storage to compete directly with other high-end Android flagships.
These configurations have appeared on the Chinese pre-order listing.
This is where it’s important to separate confirmed information from leaks.
Multiple reports have pointed to a huge 9,000mAh battery for the OnePlus 16, potentially paired with 100W wired charging and 50W wireless charging.
However, OnePlus has not yet officially confirmed the complete battery specification in the information released so far.
So, unlike the design, colors, cameras, chipset and memory options, the 9,000mAh figure should currently be treated as reported rather than official.
| Feature | OnePlus 16 | OnePlus 15 |
|---|---|---|
| Processor | Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 | Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 |
| Display refresh rate | 165Hz confirmed | 165Hz |
| Main camera | 200MP | 50MP |
| Telephoto | 50MP periscope, 3x | 50MP periscope, 3.5x |
| Ultrawide | 50MP | 50MP |
| Front camera | 50MP AF | 32MP |
| Maximum RAM | 16GB | 16GB |
| Maximum storage | 1TB | 1TB |
| Rear lighting | Interstellar Lighting Effect on one color | No equivalent feature |
The biggest confirmed upgrades are therefore the new Snapdragon platform and the much higher-resolution main camera. The rear lighting is the most obvious design novelty.
The 200MP main camera sounds like an obvious upgrade, but there is an interesting change elsewhere.
The OnePlus 16’s telephoto camera offers 3x optical zoom, while the OnePlus 15 offered 3.5x optical zoom.
That doesn’t automatically mean the new camera system will produce worse zoom photographs. Sensor size, optics, processing and stabilization all matter. But on paper, OnePlus has increased the main-camera resolution while changing the native optical reach of the telephoto.
Real-world camera testing will therefore be more meaningful than comparing megapixel counts alone.
Another theme emerging from OnePlus’ announcements is gaming.
The combination of the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6, 165Hz display, potential 185Hz gaming mode and OnePlus’ upcoming gaming conference suggests that gaming performance is going to be one of the phone’s major selling points.
A reported AnTuTu V12 listing for a OnePlus 16 configuration reached 5,384,433 points. However, this is a benchmark result from a pre-release device and should not be treated as a final retail performance guarantee.
OnePlus has confirmed that the phone is coming to China and has already opened pre-reservations there.
However, OnePlus has not announced the exact launch date yet.
Current reporting points toward an October 2026 launch in China, while the September 28 OnePlus Game Conference is expected to provide additional information before the full unveiling.
That means headlines claiming a confirmed October launch date should still be treated cautiously until OnePlus publishes the actual date.
This is currently one of the biggest unanswered questions for OnePlus fans.
The Chinese launch is confirmed, but OnePlus has not confirmed an India launch for the OnePlus 16.
There have been reports suggesting that the company’s flagship strategy outside China could look different, including speculation that India could receive another model instead. None of those India-specific OnePlus 16 plans should currently be treated as official.
For now, the safest status is: China confirmed; India unconfirmed.

Most flagship phones change their camera island, materials or colors every year. OnePlus has instead kept the basic OnePlus 15 design and added something much more noticeable to a single version.
The Interstellar Lighting Effect turns the rear panel into a small visual interface.
It won’t change how fast the phone runs or how good its cameras are, but it could become one of those design features that makes the phone instantly recognizable.
And unlike a simple decorative pattern, the lighting has a practical purpose: it can communicate activity without requiring the user to look at the display.
Yes. OnePlus has officially revealed the phone’s design, colors, memory configurations, display refresh rate, chipset and camera specifications ahead of its full launch in China.
The Tomorrow’s Starlight version has an Interstellar Lighting Effect built into the rear panel. The illuminated design includes the number 16 and celestial coordinates and can respond to notifications and other activities.
OnePlus has revealed three colors: Tomorrow’s Starlight, Dark Forest and Mars Masterpiece.
Yes. OnePlus has officially confirmed a 200MP primary rear camera. It is joined by a 50MP periscope telephoto and 50MP ultrawide camera.
The OnePlus 16 is confirmed to use Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 chipset, based on a 2nm process.
Yes. OnePlus has confirmed a 165Hz refresh rate. Reports also indicate support for up to 185Hz in gaming, but the exact behavior depends on supported software and games.
The confirmed Chinese configurations are 12GB+256GB, 12GB+512GB, 16GB+512GB and 16GB+1TB.
OnePlus has not confirmed an India launch for the OnePlus 16. China is the confirmed market at this stage.
OnePlus has not announced the official price yet.
The first official look at the OnePlus 16 may seem familiar because OnePlus hasn’t dramatically changed the overall shape of the phone. But underneath that familiar design, the company is making some significant changes.
The Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 moves the phone to Qualcomm’s latest flagship platform, the 200MP main camera represents a major camera-hardware shift, and the 165Hz display keeps the gaming focus intact.
But the most visually interesting change is sitting on the back.
The Tomorrow’s Starlight edition effectively turns part of the rear panel into a tiny notification display using the Interstellar Lighting Effect. It’s an unusual move at a time when most smartphone makers are trying to make their phones look increasingly minimal.
We still need the official launch date, price, final battery details and India availability. But as of September 26, the OnePlus 16 is already shaping up as a very different flagship from the phone its design initially suggested.
