Samsung Galaxy Tab S12 Ultra Wants to Be Your Laptop With Tool

Published by The Smart Innovator™ Staff on

The Samsung Galaxy Tab S12 Ultra is no longer trying to be just a giant Android tablet. Samsung has equipped its newest flagship with a 14.6-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X display, desktop-style DeX, a dedicated Pro Keyboard option, S Pen support, professional creative apps and a new generation of Galaxy AI.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S12 Ultra Wants to Be Your Laptop With Tool

And Samsung is being unusually direct about the goal. Its own India product page describes the Galaxy Tab S12 Ultra as offering laptop-like productivity when paired with the Pro Keyboard and Samsung DeX, while also acknowledging that a laptop may still be necessary for certain specialised software.

That makes the real question more interesting than simply asking whether the tablet is powerful enough. Can the Galaxy Tab S12 Ultra actually replace a laptop for everyday work?

In India, the answer starts at ₹1,49,999 for the Wi-Fi model with 12GB RAM and 256GB storage. The tablet goes on sale from October 7, 2026.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S12 Ultra Price in India

Samsung has announced four India configurations of the Galaxy Tab S12 Ultra, split between Wi-Fi and 5G connectivity.

VariantPrice in India
12GB + 256GB Wi-Fi₹1,49,999
12GB + 512GB Wi-Fi₹1,69,999
12GB + 256GB 5G₹1,64,999
12GB + 512GB 5G₹1,84,999

The Pro Keyboard Cover is an additional ₹27,999 in India. Samsung is also offering launch benefits including up to ₹5,000 bank cashback, up to ₹5,000 upgrade bonus and up to ₹15,000 off when buying an eligible Tab together with certain Galaxy smartphones.

That keyboard price matters when considering the laptop-replacement argument because the tablet alone and the complete laptop-like setup are two very different purchases.

Samsung’s official specifications confirm the 14.6-inch 120Hz AMOLED display, Dimensity 9500 processor, up to 16GB RAM and 1TB storage, 11,600mAh battery, 45W charging, Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6.0 and microSD expansion up to 2TB.

The 14.6-Inch Display Is Basically a Portable Workspace

The biggest reason the Galaxy Tab S12 Ultra can attempt a laptop replacement is sitting right in front of you: its 14.6-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X display.

The panel has a 2960 × 1848 resolution, 120Hz refresh rate and peak brightness of up to 1,600 nits. Samsung’s Vision Booster can adjust brightness according to surrounding lighting conditions.

That enormous canvas is particularly useful for productivity because Android’s multitasking interface has more physical room to work with. Samsung allows up to three sections in Multi Window, meaning you can keep a document, browser and another application visible together.

For work, the screen can be more useful than a smaller laptop

Imagine researching an article with a browser open on one side, Samsung Notes on another and an AI assistant or reference document in the third section. The Ultra’s display makes that workflow considerably less cramped than a conventional tablet.

The downside is obvious: 14.6 inches is huge for a tablet. This is not the device you buy because you want something compact enough to throw into a small bag.

Samsung DeX Is the Real Laptop-Replacement Tool

The most important software feature for this argument is Samsung DeX.

DeX transforms the Galaxy Tab S12 Ultra into a PC-like desktop environment with up to four workspaces. Samsung says users can move applications between workspaces and arrange apps side-by-side for multitasking. Up to five apps can be open simultaneously in each workspace, although app compatibility can vary.

This is fundamentally different from simply connecting a Bluetooth keyboard to an Android tablet. DeX is designed to make the large display behave more like a desktop workspace.

What DeX can replace

  • Basic document editing.
  • Email and communication.
  • Web research.
  • Presentations.
  • Note-taking.
  • Light productivity work.
  • Content management.
  • Many multitasking workflows.
  • Some photo and video editing workflows.

What DeX cannot magically replace

  • Every Windows or macOS desktop application.
  • Specialised professional software unavailable on Android.
  • Some enterprise applications.
  • Certain development environments.
  • Workflows that depend on desktop-only plugins or extensions.

Samsung itself acknowledges that a laptop may still be required for certain specialised software.

The Pro Keyboard Is What Changes the Equation

Samsung’s Pro Keyboard turns the tablet into a much more conventional workstation. It includes a trackpad and a dedicated Galaxy AI key, while DeX provides the desktop-style software environment underneath.

The important catch is that the Pro Keyboard is not included in the tablet’s ₹1,49,999 starting price. Samsung lists the Pro Keyboard Cover at ₹27,999 in India.

That means the entry-level Wi-Fi tablet plus Pro Keyboard effectively moves the setup to roughly ₹1.78 lakh before any discounts.

At that point, you have to compare the complete package against an actual laptop rather than comparing the tablet’s sticker price alone.

Samsung Has Added Photoshop—And That’s a Big Deal

One of Samsung’s biggest productivity pushes this generation is Adobe Photoshop.

Samsung says Photoshop comes pre-loaded on the Galaxy Tab S12 series and marks the first time the full Photoshop experience is arriving on an Android tablet in this form. The app is optimised for the large display and S Pen, with AI-powered features including Adobe Firefly tools.

Galaxy Tab S12 Ultra buyers also get four months of Photoshop mobile plan access through Samsung’s promotional programme.

For photographers, designers and creators who already use Adobe’s ecosystem, this could make the tablet considerably more useful than a typical Android tablet.

S Pen Comes in the Box

The S Pen is included with the Galaxy Tab S12 Ultra, so Samsung is not asking buyers to purchase a separate stylus for the basic creative and note-taking experience.

The pen is designed for handwriting, annotations, sketches and editing. Samsung’s product information also highlights Creative Studio, where Galaxy AI and S Pen input can be used to turn sketches into generated or refined images.

That makes the Ultra particularly interesting for students, designers, artists and professionals who work with diagrams, PDFs or handwritten notes.

Galaxy AI Is Becoming Part of the Workstation

The Galaxy Tab S12 Ultra isn’t relying on raw processing power alone. Samsung has built several AI functions into the tablet’s productivity workflow.

Now Nudge

Now Nudge can suggest relevant next actions while you work across multiple windows. Samsung positions it as a way to reduce the number of manual steps involved in common workflows.

Ask Anything in Samsung Browser

The browser can analyse the current webpage, open tabs and browsing context to answer questions, summarise information or help surface relevant content.

Automated App Actions

Samsung also says AI agents can perform multi-step tasks across supported apps. Its example involves asking Gemini to book a flight and hotel, with the AI handling the sequence of actions. Actual availability and supported apps can vary by region and service.

Gemini and Perplexity

The Galaxy AI Key on the Pro Keyboard can provide access to AI assistants including Bixby, Gemini and Perplexity. Samsung also includes a six-month Google AI Pro trial with the Tab S12 series in eligible markets.

It Also Comes With a Surprisingly Serious Creative Software Package

Samsung is trying to solve one of the biggest weaknesses of premium Android tablets: software.

The Galaxy Tab S12 Ultra comes with access to or preloads several productivity and creative applications, including Photoshop, Notability, Goodnotes, LumaFusion, Clip Studio Paint and Notion.

AppWhy it matters
Adobe PhotoshopProfessional photo and graphics editing
NotabilityNotes, annotations and study workflows
GoodnotesDigital handwriting and organisation
LumaFusionVideo editing
Clip Studio PaintDigital art and illustration
NotionPlanning, writing and project organisation
ArcSiteCAD-oriented field drawing workflows

Samsung’s India product page lists promotional access including four months of Photoshop, six months of Notability Plus, six months of Clip Studio Paint EX, one month of Notion Business and one year of Goodnotes Essential, although availability and terms can vary.

Dimensity 9500 Gives It the Power to Try

The Galaxy Tab S12 Ultra is powered by the 3nm MediaTek Dimensity 9500.

Samsung says the new chip delivers up to 19% faster CPU performance, 17% faster GPU performance and 61% faster NPU processing compared with the Galaxy Tab S11 Ultra. These are Samsung’s comparison figures, and real-world performance depends on software, workload and other conditions.

The Ultra also gets a redesigned 3D vapor chamber to improve heat dissipation during demanding workloads such as video editing and graphics work.

For a tablet trying to replace a laptop, sustained performance matters more than a short benchmark burst. The cooling system is therefore just as relevant as the headline chipset.

11,600mAh Battery and 23 Hours of Video Playback

The Galaxy Tab S12 Ultra packs an 11,600mAh battery. Samsung rates it for up to 23 hours of video playback under its test conditions.

The tablet supports up to 45W wired charging. Samsung says it can go from 0% to 100% in around 95 minutes with the 45W adapter, although the adapter is sold separately.

For mobile work, this is one of the Ultra’s strongest advantages. A large-screen workstation that can comfortably run through long study or work sessions is much more practical than one that needs to remain beside a charger.

It Is Only 5.1mm Thick—But It Is Still a Big Device

The Galaxy Tab S12 Ultra measures just 5.1mm thick and weighs 692g for the Wi-Fi model or 695g for the 5G version.

Those numbers are impressive considering the screen size and battery capacity. Samsung also uses Armor Aluminum and gives the tablet an IP68 rating for water and dust resistance.

But thin does not automatically mean small. With a 14.6-inch display, the Ultra is closer to a portable workstation than a casual tablet.

Who Can Actually Use the Galaxy Tab S12 Ultra Instead of a Laptop?

This is where the tablet becomes more interesting than a simple specification sheet.

Students

The combination of the huge display, S Pen, Samsung Notes, AI summarisation, Gemini and multi-window support makes the Ultra a powerful study machine. You can watch a lecture, write notes and ask an AI assistant questions without constantly switching devices. Samsung specifically highlights this three-way workflow.

Writers and researchers

DeX, the large screen, browser tools, keyboard and multi-window support make research-heavy work one of the tablet’s strongest use cases.

Designers and digital artists

This is arguably where the S12 Ultra has a bigger advantage over conventional laptops. The S Pen, AMOLED display and Photoshop/Clip Studio Paint ecosystem turn the tablet into a large digital canvas.

Content creators

Photoshop and LumaFusion give creators significantly more options than older Android tablets. However, professional creators who depend on desktop-only plugins, advanced codecs or specialised software may still need a laptop or desktop.

Business users

For email, presentations, documents, meetings, browser-based tools and note-taking, the Ultra can potentially function as a primary machine. The question becomes whether the user’s company’s software works properly on Android.

Who Should Not Replace Their Laptop With It?

If your daily work depends on software that has no capable Android version, the answer is simple: don’t replace the laptop.

Developers working with desktop IDEs and specialised toolchains, professionals using niche enterprise software, users dependent on Windows-only applications and people requiring desktop browser extensions should treat the Galaxy Tab S12 Ultra as a companion rather than a full replacement.

Samsung itself makes this limitation clear on the product page. The tablet can deliver laptop-like productivity, but certain specialised software still requires a laptop.

Galaxy Tab S12 Ultra: The Real Cost of Going Laptop-Free

ComponentIndia starting price
Galaxy Tab S12 Ultra 12GB/256GB Wi-Fi₹1,49,999
Pro Keyboard Cover₹27,999
Tablet + Pro KeyboardAbout ₹1,77,998

This is the number buyers should pay attention to. The tablet is impressive on its own, but the laptop-replacement proposition becomes much more expensive once the keyboard is added.

Samsung is offering up to ₹5,000 cashback, up to ₹5,000 upgrade bonus and other bundle discounts, so the actual purchase cost can be lower depending on eligibility.

Galaxy Tab S12 Ultra vs Tab S11 Ultra: Is the Upgrade Big?

The S12 Ultra is not a complete redesign. Samsung has retained the 14.6-inch form factor, 5.1mm thickness and 11,600mAh battery, while moving to the Dimensity 9500 and adding improvements such as four-channel spatial audio and the newer software experience.

The biggest practical improvements are therefore about performance, AI, software and creative workflows rather than a completely new physical design.

For an S11 Ultra owner, the upgrade case is strongest if the newer processor, AI capabilities, Photoshop experience or longer software-support horizon solves a real workflow problem. For someone buying a flagship Samsung tablet for the first time, the S12 Ultra is a much more compelling proposition.

How Long Will Samsung Support the Galaxy Tab S12 Ultra?

Samsung says the Galaxy Tab S12 Ultra receives up to seven OS upgrades and security updates, giving the tablet a much longer software-support runway than many Android devices. Availability and timing can vary by market.

That matters more for a ₹1.5-lakh-plus device because buyers are likely to keep it for several years rather than replace it annually.

So, Can the Galaxy Tab S12 Ultra Really Be Your Laptop?

For the right user, surprisingly close.

Samsung has finally assembled most of the pieces needed to make the argument credible: a huge 14.6-inch AMOLED display, a desktop-style DeX environment, a proper keyboard with trackpad, S Pen input, powerful 3nm silicon, long battery life, Photoshop, LumaFusion, AI assistants and serious multitasking.

But there is an important distinction between “laptop-like” and “laptop replacement.”

If your work is mainly documents, research, communication, presentations, note-taking, design, photo editing and other Android-friendly tasks, the Galaxy Tab S12 Ultra can potentially become your primary computer.

If your workflow depends on specialised Windows or macOS software, the tablet remains a companion device rather than a complete replacement.

And at ₹1,49,999 before adding the Pro Keyboard, this is not an inexpensive experiment. The Galaxy Tab S12 Ultra is best viewed as a premium hybrid: a tablet first, a creative canvas second and a laptop substitute when your software allows it.

That may actually be the more interesting future Samsung is building toward—not making tablets identical to laptops, but making one device capable of moving between touch, pen, AI and desktop-style computing whenever the job demands it.
